A purist of the vinyl, an ecletic selector able to blend electro and house, techno and new wave, acid madness and minimalistic cuts with a pop appeal: this and much more should be said about Steve Murphy as a dj. Records collector since 2001, Steve started sharpening his producer skills only ten years later by releasing his very first album on Chiwax, “The Chasm”, produced alongside fellows duo Die Roh. Skills that granted him, along the years, to gather consent from artists coming from almost any corner of the electronic music scene: Laurent Garnier, Carl Craig, Mount Kimbie, Skream, Legowelt, Boyznoize, Virginia, Nastia and Moxie have all played Steve’s tracks along the last years. Following releases on Chiwax with Die Roh (Windy City Ep) and a solo 10” (Planet Earth) on sister label Rawax, distinguished further Steve’s profile as a proper “Warehouse sound” lover. In 2012, teaming up with others locals artists such as Dj Octopus, Chevel, Madi Grein, Caio and Lucretio from Analogue Cops, gave birth to “Muscle Records”, which lay the foundation for what will later become “The Sound Of Brenta”: a raw, nasty, machines powered clash of house and techno which aims to expose the skills of the local hardware producers. Always in 2012, Steve collaborated with Lucretio and Die Roh to an 8 hands hardware madness project, Durant, which brought to the release of “The Dove Ultimatum”, an unfriendly 12” caractherized by distorted electro and funky acid beats. Released by Vae Victis, previously home of artists such as Blawan, Analogue Cops, Chevel and Tessela, the record got widely supported from both artists and the international press. These releases caught the attention of further labels, Lobster Theremin and Wilson above all, which respectively signed “Relax Ep” and “Split Grooves Ep”, where Steve shared the acetate with Chicago’s legend Gene Hunt. And it’s thanks also to these 2 records, both released in 2015, if Steve gained attention from many European promoters, who booked him at venues such as Tresor and Renate in Berlin, Corsica Studios in London, Batofar in Paris, Il Muretto in Venice, Sound Department in Taranto and Closer in Kiev to name a few. 2017 marks the birth of “Metal Position”, record label ran by Steve Murphy & Dj Octopus and dedicated to their passion for minimalistic electro. Always in 2017, Steve releases his first ep on Domina Trxx, “Automatic Ep”. Two tracks from the Ep got licensed for compilations: “They’r controlled Pt.1”, found its place in Skream’s Fabriclive 96 compilation while the track “Automatic” got licensed for Dj Haus’s Defected compilation “Dj Haus in the house”. With a forthcoming album to be released via Lobster Theremin during Spring/Summer 2018 and his firsts Asia/Australia and Americas tours which are being planned for end of 2018 and early 2019, there’s no doubt Steve is definetely one of the name to watch for the coming months.
